Alexander Technique

FM Alexander developed his technique at the end of the 19th century, He recognised that our natural grace, poise and equilibrium gradually lessen as we react to events, needs and desires in our lives. We begin to function closer to our minimum than our maximum potential.

Often we are unaware of the connection between our minds and bodies. We treat our mind and body as separate entities, using our minds all day long whilst our physical presence remains largely unconscious. It is usually only when something goes wrong with our bodies that we become conscious of them again.

The Alexander Technique re-establishes our natural state - the unity of body and mind working as one entity. Alexander pupils learn to become aware and take responsibility for the everyday use of the whole ‘self’ and how to bring to light and address any unhelpful or damaging ways of using themselves in daily life.

Learning new ways of carrying out activities without causing damage or undue tension within ourselves can be an exciting unfolding procedure. When you apply your awareness to the way you use your body, one thing tends to lead to another and previously unrecognised patterns begin to emerge.

Lessons in Alexander Technique are one to one with a teacher and take 30 minutes. Ideally comfortable clothing which allows movement, should be worn and shoes are normally removed. The technique is suitable for people of all ages and an initial course of 30 – 40 lessons is recommended.
