Chavutti Thirumal

‘Chavutti’ means ‘foot’ and ‘Thirumal’ means ‘massage’. This is a full body oil massage applied with the foot. As sensitive as the hand, the foot gives deeper pressure and unlike the hand is able to cover the full length of the body with each sweeping stroke, from the tips of the fingers to the toes.

The recipient lies flat on two cushioned floor mats with the hands and legs in specific positions to help the energy flow. The Therapist applies one foot at a time, holding on to a support rope, which runs above the Therapists head across the room.

The massage lasts for one and a half hours the last half hour the hands are used to apply the finishing touches to this luxurious soothing massage.

This technique was developed centuries ago by practitioners of the South Indian martial art named Kalari. They and the Kathakali dancers used and still use this massage for the suppleness and flexibility it provides before practice sessions, performances and competitions.

Chavutti Thirumal covers every ligament and muscle in the body and all the principal ‘marmas’ which are the Indian equivalent to acupressure points. It accelerates the movement of the venous blood, allowing the circulatory system to work more efficiently. It is used to tone and loosen rigid muscles and helps alleviate muscular pain and aching joints.

Chavutti Thirumal is a very effective prevention therapy. The more relaxed the body, the calmer the mind, the less overwhelmed we become by our emotions, the stronger our resistance to stress and disease.
